Numana

Inside the Conero-Nature Parc lies Numana with its historical quarter up the hill and with the lower part around the harbour. The holiday location has been awarded several times with the Italian “Bandiera Blu” and offers cliff-beaches as well as sand-pebbles beaches. From the mediterranean gardens of historical Numana and from the towers terrace you have stunning views over the Adriatic coast. North of Numana arises the majestic Mount Conero and at its west, in the central Marches inland, the landscape is dominated by sunflower fields, olive groves and vineyards.

The antique sea harbour of the Picene culture had been re-used after the 5th century BC by the Syracusians and became an important trans-shipment centre for commerce with Greece. Later in history Numana was a Roman administrational centre, a “Municipium Romanum”. Nowadays the small fishing harbour and marina is very popular in our part of the Adriatic coast, due to its beautifull coastal landscape and the Numana dockyard.
Cultural artefacts of the Picenes are exposed in the archeological museum of Ancona (Museo Archeologico) as well as in the “Antiquarium” at Numana. Our hint: Attend one of the arts exhibitions, organised in summer at the “Costarella”, a pretty lane at Numana. Remarkable is also the romanesque crucifix at Numanas sanctuary.

Sirolo

The magical medieval town is located amongst the green slopes of Mount Conero and above the Adriatic blue on a hilltop. In its historical centre the small alleys are still preserved – so narrow that cars won´t pass, as well as a huge part of the historical town walls. Having a nice walk over the town walls you can also see the antique defense towers. From its little “piazza” you may admire the
varied types of landscape around Sirolo, with their rocks and gentle mediterranean hills. In the evening the locals and tourists meet to get a drink (Italian: “aperitivo”) in the piazza – in summer Sirolos “outdoor sitting room”, before having dinner. You have the choice for dinner between a typical Italian pizza or pasta or some deliscous fish or seafood dishes on the terrace of one of the cosy restaurants. And your desert might be a wonderfull Italian icecream at a “Gelateria”.

Sirolo has been inhabited since prehistoric times. After the 9th century BC the Picenes lived here, proven for example by the the rests of settlements at the archeological site "I Pini". Around the year 560 A.D. Sirolo has been named after “Sirio” the glorious victor over the Goths. To defend Sirolo against pirates in the Adriatic sea, during the middle ages the still existing fortification was constructed. Being proud of their cultural heritage, the app 3.200 habitants of Sirolo invite you every year to several events, for example in one of their theatres, the storical “Cortesi” theatre or at the impressive open air theatre "Alle Cave".
