• Recanati
The medieaval Recanati is famous among other things because of its world famous son, the poet Giacomo Leopardi. At several sites of Recanati one can find his traces. Maybe you`ll want to buy one of his books as your Italian holiday reading and then sit in the middle of blossoming oleander bushes, having a nice cappuccino and reading it where the author himself used to sit or walk.
On the internet you can order for example: The Poems of Giacomo Leopardi (Dodo Press) by Giacomo Leopardi and Frederick Townsend.
Recanati was allready an important town in the middle ages. In the 12th century it was founded as a fort on a hill above the Adriatic sea to resist the dreaded Osmans. Friedrich II confered the town the right to build a harbour. In the last decades at Port Recanati habe been built promenades, created beaches and constructed a new centre with colourfull house facades in the style of Italian fishermans houses. It´s a nice place to do shopping, sit in a café or have dinner or lunch – not only for pizza and pasta, but they also have a good sushi restaurant.

• Loreto
Reknowned all over the world is the pilgrimage destination for its „Black madonna“. But it´s also worth a trip for its excellent Italian cuisine and skilled artisans. Don´t miss Loretos silhouette in the evening dusk, coming from Numana – the skyline with the basilica and its huge cupola roof is really beautifull.
Allready on the highway you`ll be attracted by the stunning silhouette. And when you stand on Loretos Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII or on the terrace of the Porta Marina, you may enjoy another beautifull panorama: a “tuscan” view on grain and sunflower fields, olive groves and in the background the Adriatic sea and versus west the Appenines Sibillini mountains.
The construction of Loretos basilica began in 1468 and untill its completion the most famous architects of that period have worked at it. Only in the year 1587 Lattanzio Ventura finished the important building. The cupola roof of this house of god is the third biggest in all of Italy, after the St. Peters dome at Rome and the cupola roof of Santa Maria del Fiore at Florence. The 75 metre high belfry, in Italian “campanile”, was erected between 1750 and 1755. The imposing bronze doors of the basilica, which had been completed in the year 1600, present scenes of the Old Testament.
Another building of historical importance is the Palazzo Apostolico, which confines the piazza on two sides. Its marble facing is without doubt sensational and thus its not amazing that it took 70 years to finish the building. 30 artists have worked on 610 squaremetres of sculptures and their work has been called „the most complexe artwork of sculptural arts in the 16th century”.
A round through Loreto offers many additional architectonical and arts experiences. At Corso Boccalini for example, the traditional rosary-makers lane, you`ll find a huge choice in local handicrafts, for example the traditional Loreto pottery.
If you feel hungry after a nice walk in the cultural town, you could have a tea or coffee with pasteries or salted snacks in one of the several pastry-shops, cafés or restaurants.
Behind the famous basilica is located the “Porta Marina” called bastion, which hides inside of its walls a nice garden, the “Giardini della Rimembranza”, where you can admire stunning views. Another hint: The “Pinacoteca” museum, with its 28 halls at the belle etage of the Palazzo Apostolico (directly in front of the basilica) shows for example 16th century pottery and ceramics of the oevre of Lorenzo Lotto and furthermore the works of 43 contemporary artists.

• Offagna
Very typical for the North-Marche is the town of Offagna, the antique residence of the Roman noble family of the Afrani. It is located at about 309 metres above sea level between the cities of Ancona and Osimo. Every year at the end of July takes place a medieaval event – a whole week where Offagna goes on a journey through time and all habitants take their medieaval costumes out of the wardrobe. Theatre pieces, musicians, and medieaval handicrafts liven up then the roads of Offagna.
Ravennas archbishop left Offagna in the 9th century to the descendants of a franco-germanic family. A well kept defense tower witnesses today Offagnas history – it is one of the most important fortress buildings of the Italian Marche region. The tower, built in 1454, is still there in its genuine structure and form and connected to another tower with a drawbridge.
Who is interested in storical arms, will love the museum “Delle Armi Antiche”, where they exhibit also artistically crafted ceramics. Perfect for a rainy day in winter saison: the natural sciences museum “Museo Luigi Paolucci”. You can learn a lot there about the Italian Marche`s landscapes and the five types of the Marche´s natural landscapes in the heart of Italy are explained very well: the Adriatic coast, the river valleys, the mediteranean hills, the bizarre karst landscapes with lime stone undergrounds and the mountain landscapes.
