ASCOLI PICENO
Some historians wrote that the Southern Marche province capital Ascoli Piceno has been founded by the Sabinians, but had already been a settlement in the neolithic. The Sabinians called the town Ver Sacrum from “Primavera Sacra” the “sacred spring”. And in spring you will find the Marche and Ascoli Piceno really stunning! Already at the beginning of March you see almond trees blossoming and later the pink blooms of the peach trees, ending in May with country roads perfumed by the blossoming acacia trees (botanical: Robinia pseudacacia).
Protected by the two river arms of the Tronto and Castellano towards north, south and east, Ascoli Piceno grew for thousands of years. Glamorous medieval architecture, beautifull villas facades and monumental squares witness the importance of this ancient town in the heart of Italy.
There are two important centres of rural life in Ascoli Piceno: the Piazza Arringo, the historical centre of religious and political power and the Piazza del Popolo. At the Popolo-square take place the most important town events, like “Carnevale”, the Italian carnival or the Corteo della Quintana.
